On Saturday 10th June, during Pride Month, our staff enjoyed being part of Portsmouth Pride. Thank you to everyone that talked to and with us throughout the day, either during the Parade or on our stall.
Listening and talking with each other is particularly important at Pride.
While anyone can experience a mental health problems, those of us who identify as LGBTIQ+ are more likely to develop problems like:
– low self-esteem
– depression
– anxiety, including social anxiety
– eating problems
– misusing drugs and alcohol
– self-harm
– suicidal feelings
– other mental health problems
Being LGBTIQ+ does not cause these problems. The reasons why those of us with LGBTIQ+ identities are more likely to get them are very complicated. But it is most likely to do with facing things like:
– homophobia, biphobia and transphobia
– stigma and discrimination
– difficult experiences of coming out
– social isolation, exclusion and rejection
Pride continues to be an important protest and celebration, and for those of us identifying as LGBTIQ+ and our allies.
Thank you to everyone that attended and facilitated Portsmouth Pride on Saturday 10th June. Having a local Pride event that celebrates, and also supports through charity and service stalls is so important. Thank you to Love Southsea for hosting the market/ community stalls and allowing us to share information about local mental health support and services.
